Kickstart some art: Cool projects that need cash
It's time for another roundup of crowd-funding projects that sound interesting and need our help. Feel free to send any of your own suggestions to popcandy@usatoday.com.
In no particular order:
Art Story . I love this idea from two former Disney animators: Now working independently, they want to make a family film about a boy and his grandfather who get stuck in a world of paintings. While they're asking for a lot of money ($350,000), I'm willing to give a few bucks just to see these characters pop up in works by Dali, Wyeth, Van Gogh and other artists.
Before the End: Jim Morrison Comes of Age . We've seen a bunch of movies about the musician's years with the Doors and tragic death, but now two filmmakers want to make a doc about his formative years. Says director Jeff Finn: "It's about Jim Morrison the human being versus Jim Morrison the rock star." They need to raise $50,000 by Aug. 2.
Never Mind the Bollocks . You may recognize Becky Blasband from MTV's The Real World; she was a cast member on the show's history-making first season. Now she's making a short film starring Party of Five alum Scott Wolf, though she still needs to raise more than $60,000 in the next 16 days. If you dug her then, help her out now.
Jackie Rose . Help cartoonist Josh Ulrich complete his all-ages graphic novel. Set in the 1940s, the adventure tale follows a 16-year-old girl who must fight to save her house (and knows how to wield a sword!). With 19 days to go, Josh still needs about $2,000.
C.24: The Music Keyboard for iPad. Whether you play the keyboard or want to learn, this idea of a magnetic, two-octave iPad keyboard seems pretty awesome — and a $99 pledge will get you one.
