Grab 'em all: Top Shelf unleashes massive comics sale
It's been a great year for independent publisher Top Shelf, which issued the astounding graphic novel from Rep. John Lewis, March: Book One, this summer.
I gave the book an enthusiastic review, and I've recommended several other Top Shelf publications this year, including Jeffrey Brown's A Matter of Life.
The publisher has just launched its annual super-sale, cutting the prices of comics by 50% or more. More than 100 titles have been reduced to $3 or less.
Don't know where to start? Here are my top suggestions, in no particular order:
- March: Book One. As I've written before, Lewis' graphic memoir (illustrated by Nate Powell) about his role in the civil rights movement is essential reading.
- American Elf (all volumes). James Kochalka reveals the beauty in everyday life with these diary comics.
- Carnet de Voyage. Craig Thompson (Blankets) shares his European travels in this beautifully drawn paperback.
- The Ticking. Renee French wrote and illustrated this stunning tale, which deserves space on your shelf.
- Tales of Woodsman Pete. A fine achievement by Lilli Carre, one of my favorite aritsts working today (Her artwork hangs in my daughter's room.)
- Incredible Change-Bots Two. This Transformers parody marked a departure for Jeffrey Brown, and reading it made me feel like an '80s kid again.
- The Man Who Loved Breasts. One of my longtime faves, I think the title is self-explanatory.
The sale lasts until Sept. 27.
