The holiday countdown is very real this week, and waiting for shipping just doesn’t cut it when you need the perfect present like, yesterday.
What is BOPIS and why does it matter for Christmas shopping?
BOPIS might be one of my top favorite acronyms ever and it stands for "buy online, pick up in‑store." It allows shoppers to order online and pick up in-store, sometimes as fast as the same day.
During the busy holiday shopping season, many retailers see a huge spike in traffic and that can mean limited inventory, shipping delays and inflated shipping costs. And if you're like me and love to wait until the very last moment to finish your holiday gift shopping, BOPIS can be an actual life saver.
As a professional shopper, I'm comfortable admitting that I've made several online purchases in the last two days and was able to collect my gifts in-store, saving me a ton of time. Last-minute Christmas shopping tips
- Check cut-off times: Target has same-day pick up until December 23; Walmart has pick up until Christmas Eve.
- Shop your local store: Use "Find in Store" tools to confirm inventory before ordering. If you live in a bigger city, you might have multiple locations to check!
- Be early in the day: Avoid pick-up line and parking lot drama—try and go to the store when it first opens during peak holiday season.
- Bring your order ID, barcode or ID: This is huge. Have your information ready to help speed up the process and avoid any confusion.
Is BOPIS free at major retailers?
Yes—Nordstrom, Target, Walmart, Bath & Body Works, Kohl’s and others all offer free in-store pickup during the holidays.
How long until my order is ready?
Many retailers promise orders ready in 2 to 4 hours. Be prepared for it to take a bit longer for certain orders to be processed during Christmas week. For example, I've picked up online orders at Nordstrom the next day and orders at Target in less than two hours.
