NFLPA unanimously re-elects DeMaurice Smith

The National Football League Players Association has announced that DeMaurice Smith has been unanimously re-elected as executive director.

The upcoming term will keep Smith at his position through 2021. 

NFLPA president Eric Winston announced the decision in a statement.

After the election, Smith released a statement on Twitter.

Labor lawyer Cyrus Mehri had announced an intention to challenge Smith for the NFLPA's top post.

The upcoming term will keep Smith at his position through 2021. The NFL's current collective bargaining agreement expires in 2021, so Smith's re-election will assure he will be a part of what figures to be a contentious negotiation between players and the league for a new CBA. Smith has stated that a lockout or strike in 2021 is "almost a virtual certainty"
