Dick Butkus vs. Roger Staubach headlines Sweet 16 competition to choose greatest college football of all-time
Paste BN Sports once described Dick Butkus as the "gold standard by which all other middle linebackers are measured."
It was said that Butkus always played angry, even when he was a college standout at Illinois. He was a ferocious hitter, a relentless pursuer and a monstrous force on the football field.
Fifty-five years after he played for Illinois, he enters this week as one of the favorites to win the Paste BN Sports contest to determine the greatest college football player of all-time.
Butkus takes on former Navy standout Roger Staubach, the 1963 Heisman Trophy winner, in one of two matchups to start our Sweet 16. The other features Jim Brown vs. Red Grange, two of the most iconic running backs in football history.
Voting on these head-to-head matchups begins Monday and runs through Wednesday.
Preliminary round matchups were completed last week with Charles Woodson and Ricky Williams pulling off upsets. Full results are below.
