Pennsylvania man posed as Tim Lincecum, arrested in memorabilia scam that targeted Hayden Hurst
A Pennsylvania man has been charged with posing as a former MLB pitcher and scamming Baltimore Ravens tight end Hayden Hurst, according to state police.
Micheal Daily, 25, was arrested by Pennsylvania State Police on Feb. 28 after authorities executed a warrant of his home, according to court documents.
Daily was charged with two felonies: a second-degree count of theft by deception and third-degree unlawful use of a computer, in addition to a first-degree misdemeanor charge of identity theft. He posted $25,000 bail and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 17.
According to the arresting officer, trooper Tristan Bennett, Daily posed as former San Francisco Giants Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum by purchasing a verified Twitter account and disguising it as still belonging to Lincecum. Through that account, Bennett said, Lincecumasked Hurst for signed memorabilia for his "terminally ill cousin." Hurst then mailed two game-worn jerseys, including one he donned on Dec. 8, 2019 against the Buffalo Bills, to a residence in Jackson Township, Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
"My guy! 12/9/19 game used, 3 rec 73 yards 1 TD," Hurst unknowingly wrote to Daily.
The case remains open, and Bennett said Daily used other athletes' verified accounts in his scheme, including former NFL defensive end Antwan Odom.
Police searched the residence and seized various pieces of sports memorabilia, including other NFL jerseys, cleats, gloves, balls, hats, pictures, MLB jerseys, baseballs, baseball cards and WWE championship belts.
Only when a marketing agency, LGC Sports Marketing, Hurst works with came across the signed memorabilia up for sale online, the authorities were contacted.
