Grizzlies star Ja Morant visits baby giraffe 'Ja Raffe' at Memphis Zoo
The Memphis Zoo welcomed a giraffe calf on Nov. 10 and named it "Ja Raffe," after Grizzlies NBA Rookie of the Year Ja Morant. On Friday, the guard decided to pay the baby boy a visit.
Morant brought his parents with him and met Ja Raffe face-to-face. Morant even attempted to feed him. Yes, attempted. Ja Raffe wanted no part of Morant's feeding attempts.
Not only did the 10-day-old calf stand stoically for the duration of the visit, but Morant seemed to be quite sheepish around Ja Raffe.
Morant, who is 6-foot-3, said Ja Raffe had a neck just like him, but he was scared to touch him. Eventually, Morant found his courage and touched the newborn on the nose while narrating with a "boop."
The 21-year-old referred to his parents as the baby's grandparents during the Instagram Live. And this may not be the last time we see Ja Raffe in the spotlight.
Morant said the two might make an appearance together one day — during All-Star Weekend.
"I'll dunk on you," Morant said. "If I ever do the dunk contest, I'm going to take my son (Ja Raffe) with me."
A spokesperson with Tandem Sports + Entertainment, the agency that represents Morant, told Paste BN Sports that the visit was Morant's idea, after the zoo announced the name of its newborn on Thursday. The agency, zoo and Grizzlies then worked together to make it happen.
