Lakers star Anthony Davis out indefinitely with a stress injury in foot

Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis will be out indefinitely with a stress injury in his right foot, the team announced Friday.
Davis, the Lakers big man and an eight-time NBA All-Star, injured himself Dec. 16 during a game against the Denver Nuggets. At the time, he was averaging 27.4 points and 12.1 rebounds per game and had emerged as an MVP candidate.
The Associated Press and other media outlets previously reported Davis would be out for several weeks. But the Lakers said Friday that the diagnosis was revealed after “extensive consultation with Lakers team physicians and outside specialists.’’
The injury-prone Davis, 29, missed 36 of the Lakers’ 72 regular-season games during the 2020-21 season and missed 42 of 82 regular-season games last season, according to NBA.com.
After the Lakers’ 10-2 start, Davis led the team on an 8-2 surge and had scored at least 25 points in 12 consecutive games despite back pain.
Since Davis’ injury, the Lakers have lost two of their last three games and are 13-18.
