WWE apologizes for using Auschwitz image during WrestleMania promo
World Wrestling Entertainment issued an apology on Friday after showing an image of the Auschwitz concentration camp during a promo for its premier event WrestleMania.
A five-minute video promo was shown during a kickoff show before WrestleMania 39 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, and contained a photo of the camp, which was meant to showcase a match between WWE Hall of Famer Rey and his son Dominik Mysterio.
"We had no knowledge of what was depicted. As soon as we learned, it was removed immediately,” the WWE said in a statement.
Dominik Mysterio, who went to prison as part of his storyline, says in the promo “you think this is a game to me? I served hard time. And I survived" – which was spliced with an image of the concentration camp.
"The fact that Auschwitz image was used to promote a WWE match is hard to call 'an editing mistake'," the Auschwitz Memorial said on Twitter. "Exploiting the site that became a symbol of enormous human tragedy is shameless and insults the memory of all victims of Auschwitz"
The camp image was removed from WrestleMania Night 1 and replaced with an image of a jail with barbed wire.
