You didn't actually think Luka Doncic had a 42-inch vertical, did you?
For the last seven years, Luka Doncic has left NBA fans in awe at how he can dominate the league as a 6-foot-6 point guard with seemingly no athleticism at all, putting defenses on a string and bending them to his will as he methodically gets to his spots and scores over and over and over again.
On step-back threes, on floaters, on contested layups after a defender is pump-faked into oblivion. On pretty much any shot you can think of... except a dunk.
You can count on one hand the number of dunks Doncic has in 120 games over the last two seasons (3). He hasn't dunked once since being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, and he dunked more his rookie season (25) than he has the last four years combined (23), according to Basketball-Reference. Which sounds awfully strange for someone with a 42-inch vertical.
I guess this is the part where I break the news Doncic doesn't have a 42-inch vertical (I know, tragic), which didn't feel like something that needed to be said before yesterday for all the reasons above. But apparently it did, because a Men's Health profile on Doncic's body transformation incorrectly attributed a 42-inch vertical to Doncic in a mix-up that likely had something to do with bad artificial intelligence and bad fact-checking.
That big ol' number immediately jumped right off the page. The only thing that stood out more was Doncic's new look, which made this whole thing so much more laughable. Who else let their mind wander to a place where this version of Luka Doncic actually had a 42-inch vertical? The author clearly didn't realize how insane that would have been.
A 42-inch vertical would have ranked among the best leapers in this year's draft class, which topped out at 43 inches. NBA.com only recorded three in-game verticals at higher than 42 inches last season. That kind of leaping mixed with Doncic's skill is a better than Kobe Bryant-level threat. He'd basically be prime LeBron James. The NBA can barely contain this dude below the rim. What on earth was anyone supposed to do with an above-the-rim Doncic?
Thankfully for the league, they won't have to worry about that. Even slimmed down, Doncic won't be coming close to a 42-inch vert. That doesn't mean he won't be better, though. For Doncic to get in such great shape means he's had a real change in mindset, and that's scary to consider for somebody who was already so good. The NBA won't have to look out from above, but it will have to look out.
NYC gunman was targeting the NFL
The gunman who killed four people and injured others in the shooting at a New York City office before killing himself was targeting the NFL, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday.
The alleged shooter, Shane Tamura, was trying to get to the NFL's headquarters but accidentally took the wrong elevator. A note found on his body suggested he was upset with the NFL over a claim that he suffered from CTE.
Among the people injured in the shooting was an NFL employee, reportedly from the league's finance department. Roger Goodell didn't confirm the employee's identity but did say he was seriously injured and currently in stable condition.
