Today: Lennox Lewis
Former great heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis attended the weigh-in of Wladimir Klitschko and Bryant Jennings Friday at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Lewis is intimately familiar with the Klitschkos. The last fight of his Hall of Fame career, on June 21, 2003, was against Wladimir's brother, Vitali, now the mayor of Kiev, Ukraine. Lewis, 49, who finished his career with a 41-2-1 (32 KOs) record, won that fight by sixth-round TKO when the fight was stopped due to a nasty gash over his eye. Paste BN Sports caught up with Lewis for a few minutes to talk about the upcoming Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight on May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Can we talk about the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight?
What fight is that?
How does the hype for this fight compare with the hype for your big fights against the likes of Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield?
I think hype is always great for fights, this is a mega-fight and a mega-fight always has a lot of hype behind it. I think it's going to be interesting. It's going to be a great fight.
Do you think it will live up to the hype?
"Yeah because you have two completely different styles, and styles really make fights. And that's the exciting aspect about it. You have two guys, one guy that's lost, one guy that hasn't lost, that hasn't been figured out yet, so we're going to see if Pacquiao is able to figure him out, because he moves so well and people that get in the ring, they can't figure (Floyd) out the first time, so they go back and train for six weeks or whatever, and they still can't figure him out, because what he's doing he's been doing for years. You can't do it over a matter of months to beat him, you have to figure out that plan quick."
How would you describe Mayweather's defensive style?
"You could say it's unusual, different and definitely in a class by itself. His style can't be beaten right now. I don't particularly like his style, but it works. He's the best right now."
