Miguel Cotto, Daniel Geale on target at 30-day weigh-in for WBC title bout
WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and challenger Daniel Geale came in under the limit for their mandated 30-day weigh-in Wednesday, the organization announced.
Cotto, who will be making the first defense of his 160-pound title, weighed in at 164.8 pounds. Geale tipped the scales at 158. Geale is the naturally bigger man, having competed at middleweight since 2007, so it's a surprise Cotto weighs more at this juncture. The HBO bout, set for June 6 at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, will be contested at a catchweight of 157 pounds.
The 30-day weigh-in, which has been mandated for all WBC title fights since 1997, is designed to ensure fighters cut weight safely. The combatants aren't allowed to weigh more than 10 percent of the limit for the bout. The fighters will also have to take part in a seven-day weigh-in where they can't exceed 5 percent of the limit.

Cotto (39-4-0, 32 KOs) will be making the first defense of the strap he won from Sergio Martinez last June at New York's Madison Square Garden. In fact, this bout will mark Cotto's second in the division. He's recognized as the lineal middleweight champion.
Geale (31-3, 16 KOs), a former middleweight belt holder himself, was wiped out by Gennady Golovkin last July in an attempt to regain the WBA title he once held. He rebounded with a win over fellow Australian Jarrod Fletcher in December.
The June matchup also marks Cotto's first under the guidance of Jay-Z's Roc Nation Sports.
