Adrien Broner will fight Shawn Porter on June 20 in Las Vegas
One of boxing's most outspoken fighters has his next date lined up.
Adrien "The Problem" Broner will face Shawn Porter on June 20 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, a source involved in the process told Paste BN Sports on Monday. The Premier Boxing Champions show will be televised by NBC, and according to the Los Angeles Times, will be contested at a catchweight of 144 or 145.
Broner (30-1, 22 KOs) competed on PBC's first card, a wide points victory over John Molina Jr. in March. Once regarded as a can't-miss star, Broner was dropped twice by Marcos Maidana in a December 2013 upset defeat. Still just 25, the brash Broner moved down to 140 pounds and rebounded with victories over Emmanuel Taylor and Carlos Molina.
Porter (25-1-1, 16 KOs) caught everyone's attention with a clear victory over Devon Alexander where he showed his greatest attributes: power and athleticism. Porter then surprised boxing media by blasting out Paulie Malignaggi in just four rounds in 2014. However, he dropped his IBF welterweight title in a close fight to Kell Brook in August.
Porter was slated to face Roberto Garcia on Spike in March, but the latter failed to make weight. The Ohio native scored a KO over late replacement Erick Bone.
Porter, 27, campaigns at welterweight and Broner has been competing at junior welterweight, leading to the reported catchweight. On paper, Porter is the best opponent of Broner's career not named Maidana. It's a compelling matchup and appears to be a toss-up bout between two of the sport's most impressive young fighters.
