Lucas Matthysse-Viktor Postol ordered after Danny Garcia vacates WBC title

Lucas Matthysse is getting another crack at the WBC junior welterweight title.

The WBC announced Thursday that Danny Garcia has vacated his junior welterweight bout in pursuit of the welterweight division. The organization's No. 1 contender, Viktor Postol, has been ordered to face Matthysse for the vacant belt.

Postol (27-0, 11 KOs) has been Garcia's mandatory for some time, and received step-aside money to allow the Philadelphian to fight Lamont Peterson in April. Matthysse (37-3, 34 KOs) won a WBC eliminator against Ruslan Provodnikov in a Fight of the Year contender later that month to position himself for the title opportunity.

The Ukrainian is promoted by Top Rank and Matthysse is with Golden Boy. The outfits do business together, so there should be no problem getting a deal done ahead of a purse bid.

Postol, 31, made his HBO debut in May 2015 with a spectacular knockout of Selcuk Aydin. He is undefeated and with his boxing ability should be able to give Matthysse problems. Matthysse, 32, will be the favorite, though, and is one of the biggest punchers in the sport. His latest loss came to Danny Garcia in 2013, a bout in which he was knocked down.

Garcia was granted Champion Emeritus status by the WBC, and if he decides to return 140 pounds, he'll be able to fight for the title. It's not clear if Garcia will also relinquish his WBA title.
