Antonio Tarver-Steve Cunningham heavyweight bout set for Aug. 14 on Spike

Antonio Tarver trudges on in the sport of boxing at age 46.

The former lineal light heavyweight champion and Roy Jones Jr. conqueror will fight at heavyweight for the third time when he faces Steve Cunningham on Aug. 14 on Spike, Premier Boxing Champions announced. Tarver wrote on his Twitter account that the 12-round bout will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

"The Magic Man" hasn't scored a significant win since a 2008 defeat of Clinton Woods to claim the IBF light heavyweight title. Following consecutive defeats to Chad Dawson soon after, he moved up to cruiserweight and topped Danny Green and then Lateef Kayode. However, he tested positive for a banned substance after the Kayode fight and the result was changed to a no contest.

Tarver (31-6, 22 KOs) was working as an analyst for Showtime then and never appeared in that capacity on the network following the failed drug test. He currently serves as an analyst for PBC on Spike, the very show he will face Cunningham on.

The Orlando, Fla. native knocked out Johnathon Banks in his last fight, a man best known as the head trainer to heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Cunningham (28-7, 13 KOs) will be making his maiden voyage under the PBC banner. The former cruiserweight champion has been with Main Events for a long time, but parted ways with the company following a controversial HBO-televised loss to Vyacheslav Glaskov in March. "USS" was also on the wrong end of a decision loss to rival Tomasz Adamek in late 2012. In his most notable heavyweight bout, Cunningham, 38, dropped contender Tyson Fury but was knocked out in the seventh round.

Tarver played a heavyweight champion in "Rocky Balboa." Now he's taking another step closer to actually pursuing that lofty goal.
