Brandon Rios makes weight on second try, appears gaunt ahead of Tim Bradley clash

LAS VEGAS - Brandon Rios is no stranger to battles at the scale.

The 29-year-old missed weight for his fight with John Murray in 2011, but that was at 135 pounds. Rios was then overweight in his very next fight against Richar Abril at the same weight.

Now campaigning at 147 pounds, Rios was overweight Friday ahead of his WBO welterweight title bout against Timothy Bradley on HBO. He was 147.2 on his first attempt after stripping down nude, and then less than one hour later, he made weight at 147 on the button. The fight is on.

Rios, however, is the worse for wear. He was extremely drawn in the face, and appeared to have trouble standing up on his own. He also was in an ornery mood when questioned about his physical condition following the weigh-in.

"It's no big deal," Rios said. "They rushed me into the weigh-in before I could go to the bathroom."

Rios (33-2-1, 24 KOs) might not feel it's a "big deal," but going against one of the best fighters in the world, he needs to be on his A-game. Bradley is always in supreme condition, and this bout is no exception. The Palm Springs, Calif., native was ripped and ready at 146 and is a 5-1 favorite entering the fight.

Rios needed to be at his best for this fight, and it appears he's not giving himself the best possible chance to win. He was feeling confident during a Wednesday conference call, though.

"Bradley is a good boxer, but he ain't excellent," said Rios, who is coming off a third-round stoppage of Mike Alvarado in their rubber match in January. "He's more of a brawler-boxer, but brawler first. I'm just ready for this fight, and the game plan is to not get overwhelmed on some of the stuff. Just keep grounded and keep levelheaded and I'm ready."

Said trainer Robert Garcia: "He did cut weight. When does Brandon not look drained. I feel very confident. I have no doubt. No doubt."

Rios has plenty of time to rehydrate for Saturday's clash. We'll see if he's truly ready.
