Antoine Douglas graduates from ShoBox with TKO 5 of overmatched Les Sherrington
LAS VEGAS - Antoine Douglas' fifth appearance on ShoBox: The New Generation ended exactly the four others before it: with a decisive victory.
The middleweight prospect ran his record to 19-0-1 (12 KOs) with a comprehensive shellacking of Les Sherrington on Friday at the D Hotel & Casino, a brisk Sin City night at the outdoor venue. Douglas dropped the Australian in each round (five times total) and finished him off at 1:02 of Round 5. After the impressive performance, Douglas' days on ShoBox might be no more.
"They said this was my graduation day, time for a cap and gown, so this was definitely a big win,'' said Douglas, who made it to the 2011 U.S. Olympic Trials. "It was a great experience fighting on ShoBox and I appreciate everything they've done for me getting me ready to go to the next level. Now, it's time for me to take the next step."
The veteran, with his sloppy footwork, was never in the fight and had no answers for Douglas' offensive attack. Sherrington (35-8, 19 KOs) stood in the pocket and absorbed damage from all angles and offered little resistance.
Douglas, 23, was patient, but knew he had an overmatched foe in front of him and took care of business in like fashion.
With yet another win on the prospect-oriented series, he's inched closer to a meaningful fight at 160 pounds.
"We got what Antoine Douglas needed: The type of utterly dominant performance that makes you want to see him against the best middleweights," said ShoBox analyst Steve Farhood. "Tonight was Antoine's graduation from ShoBox. Now he'll move up to bigger and better things."
- In the co-featured bout, Taras Shelsestyuk cruised to a 10-round unanimous decision over Aslanbek Koazev (scores of 99-91, 100-90 and 100-90). The 2012 Olympian busted up Koazev all fight and kept him at the end of his jab. The welterweight's record now stands at 14-0 (8 KOs).
