Freddie Roach: 'Canelo's defense is terrible,' he makes a lot of mistakes
LAS VEGAS - Freddie Roach is supremely confident his charge will pull off the upset Saturday night.
The Hall of Fame trainer sees a lot of holes in Canelo Alvarez's game, and believes Miguel Cotto will exploit them en route to victory during their HBO PPV middleweight championship fight.
"Canelo's defense is terrible," Roach said. "He follows you wherever you go. He's like a robot. If you use angles on him, he will be lost. He cannot make adjustment well. … I believe he makes a lot of mistakes and I believe we can take advantage of a lot of mistakes, he's very slow of foot. He has a lot of power in his right hand, though; he is a big puncher."
COTTO VS. ALVAREZ: Three keys to victory for each fighter
Roach believes Cotto, 35, can stave off the hard-charging Mexican with superior footwork and boxing ability. Cotto is the champion, and has scored three knockouts in three fights while working at the Wild Card Boxing Club.
"(Canelo's) a great fighter, he's a strong fighter," Cotto told Paste BN Sports "but in my backpack, I have more than enough to beat my opponent."
"No matter what I have to do on Nov. 21 to beat Canelo, I am going to do because I prepared myself for war. I prepared myself for a good fight and, I am going to do my best. This fight cannot be decided by one punch. I am going to use my whole arsenal to beat Canelo."
Said Roach: "Our experience will expose his lack of knowledge."
