Can't-miss fight: Francisco Vargas to defend title vs. Orlando Salido on June 4 on HBO

A mouth-watering matchup fans have clamored for is signed, sealed and delivered.

Francisco Vargas, one half of BoxingJunkie's 2015 fight of the year, will make the first defense of his 130-pound WBC title against Orlando Salido on June 4 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., Salido manager Sean Gibbons told Paste BN Sports. Gibbons says contracts were signed Thursday evening for the HBO Boxing After Dark main event. The fight was later officially announced.

"I want to fight the best fighters and Orlando Salido is one of the top fighters in the sport," said Vargas. "I intend to retain my title and will be prepared to the best of my ability to dominate in the ring and give the fans a fight they will remember.

"I know it will be a tough fight, Salido brings a lot of experience, but I promise not to disappoint. In the end the fans will win on June 4 , they will witness a battle between two Mexican warriors who will give it their all in the ring, it's a can't miss event."

Vargas (23-0-1, 17 KOs) survived a gruesome cut to stop Takashi Miura during their Nov. 21 junior lightweight slugfest. With the victory, Vargas claimed his first world title and put himself in position for his first HBO main event.

The 31-year-old Mexican also owns victories over Juan Manuel Lopez, Jerry Belmontes and Abner Cotto, but never has faced a savvy veteran the likes of Salido.

The Mexican knows every trick in the book. His wars with Rocky Martinez, Lopez and Terdsak Kokietgym received universal praise. Salido, 35, even possesses a win over Vasyl Lomachenko.

Salido (43-13-3, 30 KOs) is proof that style trumps substance in boxing. Even though his record isn't glamorous, he's one of the toughest outs in the sport and always delivers great entertainment for the fans.

"I was 12-years-old when I saw my first fight on television," said Salido. "It was the great Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and I watched him knockout his opponent and earn the prestigious green and gold belt. It was then that I knew then that's what I wanted to do, become a world champion boxer just like my idol Julio Cesar Chavez Sr.

"So here I am, 23 years later, looking to win the WBC belt and fulfill my lifelong dream of putting it around my waist. … I look forward to giving the fans an epic fight that will be remembered for years to come."

He's coming off a draw with Martinez in a rematch most felt he won. And Salido has held a featherweight title on three separate occasions.

"The old cliche - styles make fights (is true)," Gibbons said. "This is so much better for Orlando to fight this guy instead of chasing Martinez. He practically ran him out of the ring and still got robbed. This is just the right mix of two guys that love to fight and have such big hearts. Somebody's being carried out because there's no quit in these two guys."

HBO's 2016 campaign has been a disappointment so far. With each man's come-forward style and never-say-die attitude, this is one bout that can't do anything but please.

June 4 can't come soon enough.
