Gary Russell Jr.-Patrick Hyland, Jose Pedraza-Stephen Smith set for April 16 on Showtime
A pair of title fights will be televised on Showtime, but it's an unusual setup.
Errol Spence vs. Chris Algieri will headline an NBC tripleheader on April 16 from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., beginning at 8:30 p.m ET. Afterward, a person with knowledge of the plan told Paste BN Sports, the fights will continue with a championship doubleheader beginning at 11 p.m. ET on Showtime approximately 150 miles away at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the show hasn't been officially announced.
The main event is set to feature the rescheduled WBC featherweight title fight between Gary Russell Jr. and Patrick Hyland. That bout was originally slated to take place on March 12 at Mohegan Sun, but was postponed when Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter was scuttled.

Jose Pedraza will make the second defense of his IBF junior lightweight title against mandatory challenger Stephen Smith in the co-feature.
Russell (26-1, 15 KOs) last fought in March 2015, when he knocked out Jhonny Gonzalez to win the title. The 27-year-old was set to defend against Oscar Escandon in November, but Russell suffered a cut in training and was forced to withdraw.
Russell has been criticized for his level of opposition in the past, and the choice of Hyland will do nothing to hush the outcries. The 32-year-old Irishman isn't a top-10 contender at 126 pounds and has done nothing to deserve a title shot.
Hyland (31-1, 15 KOs) did give a good account of himself in his lone step-up fight, though, a 2012 loss to 130-pound champ Javier Fortuna.

The co-feature is a more even bout, on paper at least. Pedraza (21-0, 12 KOs) won the title last summer with an easy decision over Andrey Klimov. The 26-year-old Puerto Rican defended it successfully in October against Edner Cherry, but the win was harder to come by than expected.
Smith, one of four fighters brothers from the U.K., is the No. 1 contender to Pedraza's 130-pound title. The 30-year-old is stepping way up in competition for this assignment and has never faced a fighter of note. Smith (23-1, 13 KOs) has been impressive against limited competition, though, and is hoping to join brother Liam as a world champion.
