Oscar De La Hoya: If Canelo takes care of business, 'on May 8th I will start calling Gennady Golovkin's people'
LAS VEGAS - One of the big questions surrounding Canelo Alvarez's middleweight title defense Saturday against Amir Khan is what happens after the fight if Canelo retains his title and defeats the challenger.
If Canelo wins, he will be on the clock. He will have 10 days to decide whether he will fight Gennady Golovkin next to unify the middleweight titles or risk being stripped of his title by the WBC.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya had said previously that he wanted to possibly let the fight marinate for awhile to make it the biggest fight it could possibly be.
But on Tuesday, De La Hoya said Canelo is focused on the job at hand, and not thinking about what comes next. But De La Hoya answered the question, hinting that the next hurdle for Canelo could be the fight the boxing world wants to see, against Triple G.
"Canelo knows how to focus on the job at hand and take care of business," De La Hoya said. "And then, come May 8th, I'm going to start making the calls to Golovkin's people and see if we can work it out."

De La Hoya also addressed Floyd Mayweather's interview with Showtime hinting that he might be considering coming back.
Khan has said he thinks it was a deliberate move by Mayweather to piggy-back his name onto the Canelo-Khan Cinco de Mayo weekend.
"Amir knows that Mayweather misses the limelight, he misses the Cinco de Mayo weekend, and that's what boxing does to you, it sucks you right back in," De La Hoya said. "This is Amir's weekend and Canelo's weekend, and there's no doubt about that. The fans out there approved it. The numbers are going to be incredible.
"This is Canelo time."
