U.S. Olympic boxing team set with six men, two women; Jonathan Esquivel eliminated by pro fighter

Team USA's final competitor in the final Olympic qualifying event, light heavyweight Jonathan Esquivel, took on a difficult challenge on Tuesday, drawing former world champion and 2004 Olympian Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam of Cameroon in the professional boxer's tournament debut. Esquivel couldn't overcome N'Dam's experience, losing by unanimous decision in Vargas, Venezuela.

Esquivel was not intimidated by his experienced opponent and came out looking to land heavy shots and take the bout to N'Dam. Esquivel got stronger as the bout wore on, winning the third round on two of the judges' scorecards. Yet N'Dam was awarded the victory by unanimous decision, taking the match by only one round on each of the judges' cards. The loss eliminates Esquivel, 21, from Olympic Games contention.

With Esquivel's elimination, the 2016 U.S. Olympic boxing team is now set, with six men and two women. The men's team includes light flyweight Nico Hernandez, flyweight Antonio Vargas, bantamweight Shakur Stevenson, lightweight Carlos Balderas, light welterweight Gary Antuanne Russell and middleweight Charles Conway. The two women headed to Rio are lightweight Mikaela Mayer and middleweight Claressa Shields, the 2012 gold medalist.

The women's head coach is Billy Walsh, the associate men's coach is Kay Koroma and Augie Sanchez is the assistant coach.

The Olympic athletes are participating in a multi-nation training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and will depart for Rio de Janeiro on July 19.
