Tyson Fury-Wladimir Klitschko heavyweight title rematch finally set for Oct. 29 in U.K.
The on-again, off-again rematch between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko is back on. Again.
Weeks after Klitschko threatened legal action (to secure the rematch) in a video posted to his Twitter account, the return encounter was officially announced for Oct. 29 at Manchester Arena.
Fury will defend his lineal heavyweight championship for the first time against the man he shocked in November to win the straps. There's been no official announcement yet, but the bout is expected to be televised live on HBO.
The men were slated to meet in July, but an ankle injury suffered by Fury delayed the bout.
"Finally the rematch is fixed," Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) posted on his verified social media accounts. "I will remedy my mistake on October 29 at Manchester Arena."
The defeat was Klitschko's first in more than 10 years. The Ukrainian was known for a shaky chin early on in his career, but under the guidance of the late Emanuel Steward, he learned to tie up fighters and rattled off one of the most impressive streaks in heavyweight championship history.
Of course, Klitschko is now 40 years old, so what he has left is anyone's guess. Fury, who is listed as three inches taller than Klitschko at 6-foot-9, befuddled the future hall of famer with awkward angles and range in a dreary affair in Germany (Klitschko's hometown).
Now, Fury will enjoy home-field advantage and will enter as the champion. He's also 12 years younger at 28 years of age, but was his massive upset simply a fluke? Or a changing of the guard at heavyweight?
