Ohio State's Will Howard breaks national title game record for consecutive completions
Will Howard is two quarters away from leading Ohio State to its first national championship in more than a decade.
En route to that, though, the Buckeyes quarterback made some history of his own.
Facing a second-and-13 at Notre Dame's 38-yard line in the second quarter at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Howard set the College Football Playoff championship record for consecutive completions at 13 on a 15-yard pass to Jeremiah Smith.
Howard's first incompletion of the night came on his very next pass attempt, as Notre Dame's Xavier Watts broke up Howard's pass intended for TreVeyon Henderson.
The Kansas State transfer got into a rhythm early in the first half, as he led Ohio State down the field for an opening drive score to tie the game at 7-7. Howard and Ohio State finished 6-for-6 on third-down conversions in the first half.
Howard completed 14 of his 15 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns in the first half vs. Notre Dame, adding 26 rushing yards on six carries.
Ohio State currently leads Notre Dame 21-7 at halftime of Monday's national championship game, after Howard found running back Quinshon Judkins wide-open in the middle of the end zone on the scramble for a 6-yard touchdown.
