Bethune-Cookman sweeps PGA Minority titles
The men's and women's golf teams at Bethune-Cookman majored in drama Sunday en route to their respective titles at the 27th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championships in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The men made up a four-stroke deficit on defending champion Texas-Pan American to beat the Broncs by a shot, 883-884.
The Wildcats women went that one better, beating UT-Pan American on the first playoff hole to claim their tournament-record 10th overall title.
Each team took the best four scores of their five players as each played the 18th hole at PGA Golf Club. Bethune-Cookman finished the hole 1-under to UT-Pan American's 1-over. The teams each shot 909 over the regulation 54 holes.
Kevin Kirakossian of UT-Pan American was men's medalist with a 4-under 216, two shots better than Branson Ferrier of Alabama State. Ryan Fricker of Bethune-Cookman was third, a shot behind Ferrier.
Bethune-Cookman's Andrea Orozco was women's medalist with a 4-over 220 total, two shots ahead of Sarah Kothny of UT-Pan American.
Other winners:
— Lincoln (Mo.) in men's Division II.
— Talladega (Ala.) in NAIA.
— Robert Grant of Alabama State won a three-way playoff with defending champ Justin Watkins of Central Oklahoma and Daniel Inocencio of UNLV to prevail in the men's independent division.
— Alexis Belton of Texas Wesleyan in the women's independent division.
