Here is what Kansas basketball coach Bill Self has said about Arterio Morris
Kansas basketball coach Bill Self, who a few months ago was ebullient in describing Texas transfer guard Arterio Morris, was short and direct Friday when announcing Morris' dismissal from the Jayhawks.
Morris was arrested Friday and charged with rape, following an incident that allegedly occurred in late August in the Douglas County, Kansas area. Morris was previously suspended, prior to his dismissal.
It is not the only legal difficulty Morris has faced. Earlier this year, a plea agreement was reached in a separate case that originated in the state of Texas. He pled no contest to a Class C misdemeanor for assault that was tied to his June 2022 arrest for an alleged altercation involving an ex-girlfriend, which occurred before he began his college career at Texas and originally brought the charge of a Class A misdemeanor.
Morris, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound former McDonald's All-American from Kimball High School in Dallas, played his freshman year at Texas. He averaged 4.6 points and 1.4 rebounds per game with the Longhorns before deciding to transfer to Kansas after the 2022-23 season.
Here is what Self has had to say about Morris during his brief time with the team:
Kansas basketball coach Bill Self dismisses Arterio Morris from team
"When we learned of allegations regarding Arterio Morris, he was suspended from the Kansas men's basketball program," Self said in a statement on Friday. "We are now aware he has been arrested and charged, and he was dismissed from the program.
"As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are not able to comment further at this time."
Bill Self touts the addition of Arterio Morris to KU program
When Kansas basketball coach Bill Self formally announced the addition of Texas transfer Arterio Morris to the Jayhawk roster in May, he was ebullient.
"Arterio was highly recruited coming out of high school and we watched him a ton his senior year at Kimball (in Dallas)," Self said when introducing Morris. "When he entered the portal, we went right after him.
"Arterio is one of the most talented guards in the country who hasn't scratched the surface of his potential. He can defend. He can slide. His explosiveness and versatility will be a great addition to our team."
Bill Self is aware of Arterio Morris' prior arrest
“We are aware of the charge that Arterio is facing in the state of Texas,” Self said in a statement after Morris signed with the Jayhawks. “In addition to working with our athletic department and campus administrators, we have also spoken at length with Arterio, his family, his former institution's University Student Affairs office and his former institution's Department of Athletics' Compliance and Administration offices.
"Based on these discussions, we are comfortable welcoming Arterio to the University of Kansas, and he is well-aware of the high standards and expectations that come with being a member of the Kansas Men's Basketball program. We fully expect him to meet those daily.”
