North Dakota upends Neb.-Omaha in outdoor hockey game

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nick Mattson and Danny Kristo had a goal and an assist apiece as North Dakota waited out a delay of more than two hours to beat Nebraska-Omaha 5-2.

Saturday's game was outdoors at TD Ameritrade Park. But the teams couldn't play until the temperature dropped at sundown.

The rink sat between what would be first and third bases at the baseball stadium where the College World Series is played each June.

When it did, North Dakota (16-8-6, 11-5-6) struck quick and scored three goals in the first 10:32. Jordan Schmaltz, Mattson and Mitch MacMillan scored early for a 3-0 lead.

That led to Nebraska-Omaha goalie John Faulkner being pulled. With 52 career wins, Faulkner remains one win from a school record. He saved only two of the five shots he faced Saturday.

Nebraska-Omaha (16-12-2, 12-9-2) made it interesting with a pair of goals by Josh Archibald and Dominic Zombo minutes apart midway through the third period.

Zane Gothberg had 29 saves for North Dakota, which swept the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series.
