Texas softball vs Clemson final score, highlights: Tigers take Super Regional Game 1
With one game down in Austin, the Clemson Tigers are one game up.
Everyone did their part as Clemson bids for its first Women's College World Series appearance, with Julia Knowler leading the way with a pair of RBIs in the Tigers' 7-4 win. The game puts Clemson a game away from the WCWS, and puts the Longhorns on the brink of elimination.
Both teams played deep into the night after a lengthy lightning delay pushed the first pitch back. Reese Basinger turned in four strong innings before Brooke McCubbin slammed the door shut on the Longhorns in another three. While Clemson had two big scoring innings, Texas was never able to string a long rally together. Its best chance came in the sixth on a two-out rally, but Clemson was able to stop the bleeding after just two runs drew the Longhorns to within three.
Now, Texas goes into Friday's Game 2 with its back against the wall while Clemson seeks a program first.
Recap Thursday's action below.

Bottom of seventh inning
Clemson wins Game 1
Clemson ultimately clinches the win despite some shaky seventh-inning defense. The Tigers are now just a game away from their first College World Series appearance thanks to a three-hit game from Alex Brown and two three-plus run innings.
Top of seventh inning
Texas gets out unscathed
Tough series of events for Alex Brown. First she got the hook back on a called strike after thinking she drew a walk. Then she gets called out at first on a bang-bang play that gets upheld after Clemson challenges. The Longhorns go into the bottom of the seventh three runs back.
Bottom of sixth inning
Texas draws to within three
That's how it's done. Texas doubles its run total with a two-run single off the bat of Henry right back up the middle. A flyout to center from Scott ends the inning, but 7-4 may feel a hair better than 7-2 heading into the seventh if the Longhorns can hold Clemson scoreless in the top of the frame.
Texas threatening with two outs
After a two-out double, a pair of infield singles have the bases loaded with two down for Texas. There aren't any five-run home runs, but if the Longhorns are going to cut into this deficit the time is now.
Top of sixth inning
Gutierrez gets out of the inning
It took some doing, but Texas does manage some triage. It now has six outs to get five runs. Not unheard of. But difficult.
Clemson capitalizes, drives another run in
Clemson is killing Texas station to station. Maddie Moore drives a run in as a ground ball gets through the pulled-in left side of the infield, and it's 4-2 Clemson. The next batter, Julia Knowler, then breaks it open with a shot to the gap to drive in another two and make it 6-2 Clemson. Just a huge swing here for the Tigers.
Clemson gets call overturned
Bit of a weird sequence there. A ground ball to short results in a force out at third, then the runner at third tries to advance, advancing the runner on second to third. Then, a Clemson challenge overturns the call at third, which now loads up the bases with nobody out. Tough sequence for Texas, which undoubtedly feels like it should have gotten someone in that chaos.
Clemson looking for insurance late
The Tigers are hoping to build out their lead a little further. Clemson now has two runners on to lead off the sixth inning, as it looks to distance itself from the potent Longhorns.
End of fifth inning: Clemson 3, Texas 2
Jamison Brockenbrough throws out runner at home
Jamison Brockenbrough gets Clemson out of a bases-loaded and zero-out jam by fielding a flyball in center field for the second out and throwing out Ashton Maloney trying to score on the sac fly to tie the game.
The Longhorns had runners on second and third and no outs and then the bases loaded with one out and could not tie or take the lead.
Clemson is six outs away from potentially stealing Game 1 from Texas.
Brooke McCubbin relieves Reese Basinger
Clemson makes a pitching change, as Brooke McCubbin takes over for Reese Basinger in the bottom of the fifth inning. Texas is threatening with two runners on in scoring position following a single by Ashton Maloney and a double by Kayden Henry to open the bottom of the inning.
End of fourth inning: Clemson 3, Texas 2
Reese Basinger records a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fourth inning, her first 1-2-3 inning of the game. In the top half of the inning, Alex Brown picked up her third hit of the game, but the Tigers were otherwise shut down.
Clemson remains ahead 3-2 entering the top of the fifth inning. The Tigers are nine outs away from stealing Game 1 from the Longhorns.
End of third inning: Clemson 3, Texas 2
Mia Scott hits home run for Texas
Mia Scott gets a run back for Texas right away, leading off the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run. It's Scott's eighth home run of the season. Scott took a pitch away and stayed back and drove the ball the other way for the home run.
Marian Collins doubles to give Tigers 3-1 lead
Marian Collins doubled to deep left field to plate two runs to give Clemson a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Kaydee Bennett misplayed the ball in the outfield and received an error on the play. That's the second error of the inning for the Longhorns.
Clemson ties game at 1-1
Following back-to-back singles to open the third inning by Clemson, shortstop Katie Stewart misfields a ball and commits an error, allowing Alex Brown to score from third base to even the score 1-1. Brown led off the inning with a single and was followed by a single by Maddie Moore to put runners on the corners and no outs.
End of second inning: Texas 1, Clemson 0
Both teams threaten in the second inning, but neither can push across a run and it remains 1-0 Texas through two innings.
The Longhorns loaded the bases with two outs following a leadoff double by Joley Mitchell. However, Reese Basinger induced a groundball out to shortstop off the bat of Kayden Henry to escape the inning.
In the top of the inning, Clemson got back-to-back two-out singles, but could not push across the run with a runner in scoring position.
End of first inning: Texas 1, Clemson 0
Mia Scott bunt single, error gives Texas lead
Mia Scott lays down a perfect bunt for a single and an error from Reese Basinger allows Kayden Henry to score from first to give Texas a 1-0 lead. Henry was initially ruled out on an infield single, but the Longhorns successfully challenged the out call.
Tigers goes scoreless in top of first
Teagan Kavan retired three straight hitters out of the delay to strand Alex Brown on first base following the 1 hour and 31 minute delay. Brown led the game off with a single before the game entered a delay four pitches in.
