Who will Texas softball play next in WCWS semifinals? Longhorns to take on Tennessee
The Texas softball program took an enormous step toward a national championship on May 31.
Facing off against four-time reigning national champion Oklahoma, which defeated them in the championship series of last year’s Women’s College World Series, the No. 6 Longhorns pulled off the upset, getting solo home runs from Kayden Henry and Joley Mitchell to knock off the rival No. 2 Sooners 4-2 at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
By earning the win, Texas cleared what had been an insurmountable hurdle. It was the Longhorns’ first-ever win against Oklahoma in the WCWS and entering the day, they had been 0-3 against the Sooners (compared to 52-8 against everyone else).
As one of just two undefeated teams remaining in the field, more obstacles still await coach Mike White’s team.
With the win against Oklahoma, Texas earned a day off, after which it will regroup to take on No. 7 Tennessee, which defeated No. 9 UCLA 5-4 on June 1 in an elimination game. A win against the Lady Vols would eliminate Tennessee from the WCWS.
