Dawn Staley can't attend Super Bowl because of Trump. Why the basketball coach is impacted.
COLUMBIA — South Carolina women's basketball coach and Eagles fan Dawn Staley planned to attend Super Bowl 59 but on Wednesday, she revealed that she can't anymore.
President Donald Trump announced he will attend the Super Bowl game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans on Sunday. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, there are laws that restrict air traffic in proximity to the president. Staley said that is why she can't go.
The FAA puts flight restrictions in place when the president is traveling, and on Friday officially confirmed the temporary flight restrictions for New Orleans from 3:45-5 p.m. ET and 10:15-midnight on Sunday
South Carolina has a game in Austin against Texas that tips off at 2 p.m., so Staley's travel time to get to New Orleans wasn't flexible to begin with, as kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
"And I'm not going to the Super Bowl, Trump is going to be at the Super Bowl so they closed the airspace," Staley said. "Party here though."
Staley is a native of Philadelphia. For most Sundays this season and in previous years, Staley has worn some form of Eagles gear while coaching South Carolina. Ahead of the NFC Championship, she had an Eagles visor, shirt and green sweatpants.
When she told reporters on Wednesday afternoon that she couldn't go anymore, she was wearing an Eagles shirt and visor.
