Josh Allen throws touchdown pass to himself on Bills amazing lateral vs. 49ers
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is padding his stats. He threw a touchdown pass to himself on Sunday Night Football.
Josh Allen and Amari Cooper have only played four games together. They are already improving trick plays for touchdowns.
Cooper pitched a lateral back to Allen in the red zone and the Buffalo Bills quarterback dove for the pylon for a touchdown to send Highmark Stadium into snowball-tossing frenzy.
The play is officially scored a Josh Allen 7-yard touchdown pass to Josh Allen.
The spectacular touchdown gave Buffalo a 28-3 lead in the third quarter over the San Francisco 49ers.
Buffalo had first-and-7 from the 7-yard line. Allen flicked a short pass to Cooper, who corralled the ball before being wrapped up by a San Francisco defender. Cooper pitched the ball back to Allen, who followed the play. Allen caught the ball and leaped to the goal line, extending the ball in his right hand.
It is scored as a touchdown pass and touchdown reception for Allen because it was initially a thrown ball. Allen is not credited with a reception but is given 7 receiving yards.
"I wish (Cooper) got credited for something there, an assist or a passing touchdown," Allen said. "I kind of threw a bad ball and was kind of chasing it. We made eye contact and he pitched it and I had to go make a play. It was dope."
"I was figured he was over there because he wanted the ball so I gave it to him," Cooper said.
Allen is the fourth player in NFL history to record a receiving touchdown on a pass he threw, and the first since Marcus Mariota in the 2017 playoffs.
Allen rushed for an 8-yard touchdown in the third quarter, becoming the second player since 2005 to pass, run and throw for a touchdown in the same game. San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey accomplished the trifecta in 2022. McCaffrey was the first player since LaDanian Tomlinson did it for the Chargers in 2005
