Holliday hits HR in possible final STL at-bat
The Cardinals activated Matt Holliday, who broke his thumb last month, from the DL Friday to give the vet a (possible) final at-bat at Busch Stadium, since they likely won't be picking up the option on his contract.
After playing for St. Louis for nearly eight years and winning a World Series with the club, Holliday released a statement thanking the fans and the organization before the game. When the seven-time All-Star stepped up to the plate in the seventh, the fans gave him a standing ovation. And then, Holliday gave them a home run.
This will give you chills.
It was the perfect way to say goodbye to the home fans. Holliday appeared to be wiping tears from his eyes after he rounded the bases.
It was like a moment from a sports movie came to life.
Holliday wrote in his statement:
"It has been an honor to play in front of such great fans and for such a historic organization. I can honestly say it has been a dream come true. While I'm disappointed this could be it here in St. Louis, I understand that it might be time to move on."
If that was Holliday's last at-bat in a Cardinals uniform, that home run will definitely make it easier for him to move on. Exits don't get much better than that.
