Vin Scully signs off with trademark class

The Giants beat the Dodgers, 7-1, at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Sunday. The win ensured the Giants a spot in the Wild Card game against the Mets on Wednesday, but ended the 67-year broadcasting career of legendary Dodgers announcer Vin Scully.

During the final half inning of the broadcast, Scully cited a frequently referenced quotation - "Don't cry because it happened; smile because it's over" - and, as the Giants celebrated on the field, concluded, "I have said enough for a lifetime. And for the last time, I wish you all a pleasant good afternoon."

Scully returned to wrap the game on Sportsnet LA and recited an Irish blessing before signing off one last time. It's about as lovely as you'd expect:

Scully began broadcasting Dodgers games in 1950, when the team still played in Brooklyn. He often seemed sheepish about the attention he received in his final season behind the mic, but handled it with the class and grace that were trademarks of his 67-year career. His voice will live forever as the soundtrack for too many iconic baseball moments to count.
