Norman put Trump in touch with the Australian PM
For as big a figure as Donald Trump is in the United States at the current moment, he's an even bigger figure in golf. Long before he became President-elect, he played a key role in the industry and, naturally, got to know almost everyone in the process.
Last week, one of those contacts came in quite handy from a diplomatic perspective.
Shortly following his victory, Trump received a host of calls from leaders around the world congratulating him on his victory. One of the earliest calls Trump received - the second earliest, to be specific - was from Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Turnbull jumped ahead of other world leaders like UK Prime Minister Theresa May, for example, in speaking to Trump by asking Norman to give him his private cell phone number.
And it worked! News.com.au has the story:
Australian golfing legend Greg Norman went to sleep last Tuesday night "knowing" that when he woke up Donald Trump would have been elected president.
What he may not have realised [sic] was that his surprising friendship with the gregarious Republican would soon become essential for his home country and the United States' diplomatic relations.
It continued:
Mr Turnbull's office has confirmed Norman passed on his friend's private mobile number to the Prime Minister at the request of Australia's US ambassador Joe Hockey, facilitating the pair's "very warm discussion".
