Broncos fans should be excited about Romo
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport sent the NFL world spinning on Sunday. Ahead of the Sunday slate of games, he published an article that included dropped this little firecracker:
Romo, I'm told, already has eyes on the Broncos as a possible destination if general manager John Elway decides Paxton Lynch needs another year and that Trevor Siemian isn't the guy. Other options, depending on a variety of factors, include the Bears, Jets, Cardinals, and Bills. When the Cowboys do trade him, they'll still have to deal with about a $20 million salary-cap hit. Romo will have significant say in the matter given that he will need to renegotiate his deal. He, essentially, could veto any move.
Whether you're a Romo-skeptic or not, this should be a very excited.
From the Broncos perspective, assuming they can make the salaries work, it's a mouth-watering proposition. This team really is only one good quarterback away from being the best team in the NFL. Good defense is the team's backbone; with all due respect to Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch, adding a top-tier quarterback like Romo to a team that is already 7-3 with Siemian and Lynch would send a shockwave through the NFL.
For Romo, Denver would be the perfect landing spot. John Elway doesn't need to do much to convince big-name quarterbacks that their last, best chance of success lies in Denver (see Manning, Peyton). And besides, he'd probably welcome not having to shoulder the entire load of a massive franchise week-in, week-out. A proven system of success would be there waiting for him. The keys are in the car; all he'd have to do is turn it on.
