Red Sox exec: Ortiz would call if he wanted to come back

David Ortiz got Red Sox fans in a frenzy on Tuesday when he celebrated the Chris Sale trade by hinting at a return for the 2017 season.

Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski wasn't worried about the seriousness of Big Papi's Instagram post.

In an interview with The Providence Journal, Dombrowski said that he had no intention of reaching out to Ortiz even after the cryptic social media post.

"I wouldn't want to reach out to him. I wouldn't want to keep bothering him."

He continued, adding that he thought Ortiz was joking. He figured that Ortiz would have called the Red Sox organization if there was any real desire to stage a comeback.

"I know David well enough - and I know that if he really had sincere interest, that he would call. It's just like when I walk into the (Fenway Park) clubhouse and he's working out and I say, 'Hey, you could play now in the shape you're in,' and he says, 'Oh, no, no, no.'"
