NBC: Don't blame camera for Derek Carr's incomplete pass
In the Raiders dismal loss for the Chiefs came this play where fans - at least those who watched this replay over and over again on the internet - were convinced the pass hit NBC's SkyCam wire.
It's a weird moment for sure. But it wasn't the wire, according to a statement emailed to FTW from NBC spokesman Dan Masonson ( which he first gave to Sportsvideo.org):
"The overhead camera is always positioned behind the line of scrimmage, so the cables would not be in play."
OK, so what about that injured pinkie? Here's what he said about how his injured finger affected his dismal performance, per Paste BN Sports' Lindsay Jones:
Carr refused to blame his 17-of-41 passing performance on the dislocated right pinkie finger he suffered two weeks ago, an injury that likely was even more restrictive given the frigid night at Arrowhead Stadium, where the wind chill hovered around 15 degrees throughout the game. Because of the finger injury, Carr was unable to comfortably handle snaps from under center.
"It definitely wasn't the finger's fault," Carr said of his performance.
Awful Announcing points to this explanation via ESPN of the moment:
Yet, Carr was off and badly out of sync with his receivers all night, perhaps no more so than in the fourth quarter, when he had Amari Cooper wide open on a scramble drill, but Cooper took a bad angle and simply missed the ball.
Cooper said the ball moved on him at the last second and several fans have said that replays show the ball hitting NBC's camera wire that goes over the field.
"That's why it looked like I might have stumbled," said Cooper, who had five catches for 29 yards. "I was running in the right direction and it kind of moved inside at the last minute and I didn't have time to get it."
