Julian Edelman says Super Bowl 51 catch was 70 percent luck

As the New England Patriots' celebrations are just getting started, coach Bill Belichick and wide receiver Julian Edelman made a stop at "The Tonight Show" in New York as part of their Super Bowl victory tour.

Tagging it as "The Edelman Catch," host Jimmy Fallon described Edelman's unlikely 23-yard catch up the middle late in the fourth quarter as the game-changer - or "unbelievable, great, awesome football."

Giving Fallon and viewers a glimpse into what went through his mind after making the catch, Edelman said:

After it all happened, I was kind of disappointed in my route, I'm not going to lie. I should have stuck a little harder and [Atlanta Falcons cornerback Robert] Alford actually made a decent play on the ball. Thankfully, he didn't finish it. The ball got batted up in the air, and I kind of just dove.

Because of the improbability of such a catch - after bouncing off the leg and foot of Alford - Fallon asked the wide receiver how much of it was luck versus his eye-hand coordination.

"It was probably like 70 percent luck," Edelman said.
