Derek Jeter referred to Giancarlo Stanton as 'Mike'
Derek Jeter is the new CEO and part owner of the Miami Marlins, and in the coming weeks, his ownership group will have major decisions to make about the team's future - notably, the plan for superstar home run-hitting machine Giancarlo Stanton.
He just might want to call him by the correct name. Jeter referred to Giancarlo as "Mike" during his Tuesday press conference.
Stanton made his MLB debut in 2010 as "Mike" Stanton - after his father - but in 2012, he announced that he would go by his first name of Giancarlo. For the past five years, Stanton has been referred to as Giancarlo. It's his name.
So, Jeter's mixup wasn't the most encouraging start for a fanbase that ultimately expects to see Stanton with a new team next season.
Giancarlo said in 2012 that his family and close friends call him "Mikey," but Jeter said he neither knows Stanton well nor has he spoken with him. It just sounded like Jeter called the star player of the team he owns by a name the star hasn't gone by for five years.
To be fair, Jeter did play with a Mike Stanton during his playing career.
