One stat that shows how much better pro golfers are

Golf fans are often hit with "these guys are good" stats - stats that, for all the blood and sweat and tears amateur golfers pour into improving their own golf games, make them feel totally inadequate compared to the game's best.

It's true, of course. Professional golfers are impossibly good at a game that perplexes us all, even on the best days. How much better, you ask? Well, here's a stat that puts it all in perspective, courtesy of Columbia professor and golf statistician Mark Broadie.

That's right: professional golfers on average only hit one ball into a hazard every five-and-a-half rounds they play. Average golfers probably lose, what, like a three golf balls per round? Drives into the water, drives into the trees, drives into houses - and pro golfers are out here barely noticing any of those hazards.

Just your latest reminder that these guys are really, really, really good.
