Former NFL star nominated for acting award

Apparently dominating the NFL for a decade wasn't enough for former Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. He's now set his sights on taking over the world of acting, and he's off to a fast start.

The nominations for the 2018 Independent Spirit Awards were announced Tuesday, and Asomugha is up for the best supporting actor award for his work in Crown Heights, which won the Audience Award for a U.S. film at Sundance. The 36-year-old is going up against well-established names like Sam Rockwell and Armie Hammer for the award.

Crown Heights is based on the true story of Colin Warner, who was wrongly convicted of murder, and his friend Carl King (played by Asomugha), who spent his life trying to prove his friend's innocence. Here's a trailer for the movie…

Asomugha told E! News he spent two weeks with King to get into the role.

Asomugha played 11 seasons in the NFL. He made the Pro Bowl three times and was named to Paste BN Sports' NFL All-Decade Team for the 2000s. He is married to actress Kerry Washington. Now he can add award-nominated actor to his already impressive resume.
