UCF pick ends wild, 2OT title game against Memphis
There aren't enough adjectives in the dictionary to adequately describe the absurdity of the Memphis-Central Florida matchup Saturday for the American Athletic Conference title.
It was beyond exciting, crazy, unexpected, outrageous, enthralling, jaw-dropping and offensively explosive. It was also the highest scoring conference championship title game in history, according to ESPN.
(During the game, news also broke that Knights coach Scott Frost agreed to a deal to take over at Nebraska.)
UCF spectacularly came out on top, 62-55, and kept its perfect 12-0 season alive after two overtimes. But while the championship clearly could have gone either way, it was all over when defensive back Tre Neal picked off Memphis quarterback Riley Ferguson's pass on 2nd-and-goal when it was touchdown-or-bust for the Tigers.
The teams combined for 1,479 yards, 63 first downs and nearly 52 percent on third-down conversions. UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton was 28-for-40 with 494 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions, while Ferguson put up similarly ridiculous stats, going 30-for-42 with 471 yards and one pick.
When two college quarterbacks combine to approach the 1,000-yard mark, you know you've watched something incredible.
The game went into overtime following an unexpected sequence of events, given the wild stats both teams racked up. With less than 30 seconds left, the teams were tied at 48, but Memphis missed a 51-yard field goal.
When the Knights got the ball back, Milton threw a pick, but then their defense responded by sacking Ferguson.
This game was so insane, and college football fans everywhere couldn't get enough of it. Some even argued that this game is the perfect example for why the College Football Playoff needs to expand to eight teams from four.
