Navy students started 'I Believe That We Will Win' chant
If you've been to a sporting event - like any sporting event from high school to the pros - there's a good chance you've heard the "I Believe That We Will Win" chant.
It's insanely popular and galvanizes fans as much as a clutch play at the end of a game. But do you know who started it? According to CBS Sports Network, it was created by Jay Rodriguez - who graduated from the Naval Academy in 2003 - and caught fire when he shared it with classmate Corey Strong, a cheerleader who first tried out the chant at a Navy football game in 1999.
Neither of them can believe how universally recognized the chant is almost 20 years later.
In the CBS video, Rodriguez and Strong recalled the 1999 Army-Navy game and how in the fourth quarter, when it looked like the Midshipmen would win, Strong ignited the chant. He compared it to a slow clap, with everyone looking around at each other, knowing it was the right time to start cheering.
"We didn't win a lot of games, but we believed," Strong jokes.
