Aly Raisman blasts USA Gymnastics' 'hurtful' statement
On Tuesday, U.S. gymnast Maggie Nichols revealed that she was the first athlete to accuse former team doctor Larry Nassar of sexual abuse as "Athlete A" in the court documents.
When USA Gymnastics responded to Nichols' statement, U.S. gold medalist Aly Raisman blasted the organization for yet another tone-deaf response to sexual abuse.
Raisman took to Twitter on Wednesday and stood up for her fellow gymnast.
In December, Raisman had shared a powerful letter she wanted to read at Larry Nassar's sentencing. She wrote at the time:
Realizing that you are a victim of sexual abuse is a horrible feeling. Words cannot adequately capture the level of disgust I feel when I think about how this happened. Larry abused his power and the trust I and so many others placed in him, and I am not sure I will ever come to terms with how horribly he manipulated and violated me. …
I am writing this letter to share some of my story, in hopes that it will help others understand the profound impact Larry's abuse has had on me, how his betrayal of trust has changed me and how his actions years ago continue to affect my daily life.
Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison on child pornography charges.
