Denis Shapovalov struggles to peel banana at Aussie Open
The Australian Open started this week, and almost immediately, there were multiple strange incidents over bananas on the court in the men's and women's brackets.
On the men's side, Canadian Denis Shapovalov was facing Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round of the tournament, and during a pause in the third set, Shapovalov wanted to eat a banana. Simple enough, right?
Unfortunately for him, Shapovalov apparently had a stubborn batch of bananas and struggled multiple times to open them, tossing difficult ones aside before trying again with another. Eventually, it all worked out.
Shapovalov won and advanced to the second round.
In the women's bracket, things were a little less goofy.
Coco Vandeweghe - who spent the four days prior in bed with the flu, according to Paste BN Sports - refused to play without eating a banana first. But there weren't any bananas readily available, and Vandeweghe debated with the official over the unusual situation, calling him "rude."
Ultimately, she got her banana but was also penalized.
The American lost her match to Hungary's Timea Babos.
