Golfer sorry after tossing head cover at caddie
Rhein Gibson was on the final hole of the Bahamas Great Abaco Classic on Wednesday, in contention for a potential playoff for a win, when he hit a shot into a hazard.
His caddie, Brandon Davis, was the one who grabbed the ball for a drop - that cost Gibson a one-shot penalty (we'll get to why in a second). That led Gibson to taking his putter head off and flinging it at Davis:
Gibson later apologized:
Davis, however, defended his actions:
Davis pointed to rule 18-2 in the golf rulebook, which addresses the fact that a ball in play can't be moved by a player, a caddie or his partner, and if it is, it's a penalty.
He clarified, addressing Gibson:
Here's exactly what happened … Ball was dead underneath two rocks and I told you about it and you said "(expletive)" and turned around stopped looking and walked back to the bag. The tour official actually found the unhittable ball. I then went over and quickly retrieved it. 100% fact.
Still, Gibson was penalized and ended up in third place. He lost money and is concerned about the possibility that he could lose out on a PGA Tour card by the end of the season because of a gaffe.
