How Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s grandson is honoring him
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For the 40th consecutive year, there will be an Earnhardt racing in the Daytona 500.
Jeffrey Earnhardt - now-retired Dale Jr.'s 28-year-old nephew and the late Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s grandson - will drive the No. 00 Chevrolet for the StarCom Racing team and keep the family tradition going. ( But Dale Jr. will still be at the race.)
Sunday's Daytona 500 marks the 20th anniversary of Dale Sr.'s lone win in the Great American Race - though the actual date was Feb. 15, 1998 - and Jeffrey has found the perfect way to honor his grandfather. His helmet features a portrait of Dale Sr., and Jeffrey told FOX Sports he will wear it for the 500 and throughout the season.
After securing his ride for the Daytona 500, Jeffrey told Paste BN Sports:
"There's been an Earnhardt driving in the 500 for 39 years, so to be able to keep that streak going for a 40th year means a lot to me, and I'm sure a lot of Earnhardt fans are going to be happy to hear this news," he said.
