Larry Nance Jr. ‘excited’ to wear his dad’s retired No. 22 with Cavs

When Larry Nance Sr. found out that his son was traded from the Lakers to the Cavaliers, he called the Cavs and asked them to let his son wear his No. 22 that the team retired in 1995.

Larry Nance Jr. refused to wear it and went with No. 24. However, on Thursday, Nance Jr. said he will be switching to his dad's number. The 25-year-old explained that the only reason he didn't want to take it was because he didn't want the Cavs to take the No. 22 banner down at The Q, but they were able to work something out with the league.

"I can't imagine the league has seen anything like this or will see anything like this for a very long time, so kind of a special request they let get through the cracks and I'm excited about it," Nance Jr. said to reporters (via video from Fox Sports Ohio).

Nance Jr. made the announcement before playing his first game in Cleveland. He'll start wearing his new number next week, per ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

McMenamin also reported a cool thing the team is doing for fans. If you bought a No. 24 Nance Jr. and want to switch numbers too, you'll be allowed to do so through the team shop at the arena.

Nance Jr. already wore his dad's number this past weekend during the NBA Dunk Contest, though it was a Suns jersey since that's the team Nance Sr. was on when he became the first Dunk champ in 1984.
