Kenworthy salutes Dick's Sporting Goods for response to tragedy
After 17 people were killed in a school shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school this month, several major U.S. companies are responding, including Dick's Sporting Goods.
Citing that "thoughts and prayers are not enough" of a reaction, the company is banning sales of assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines from being sold in its stores.
Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy said he loves the sporting goods company's decision and responded with a delightfully crude joke commending it for taking a stand.
Kenworthy is not the first Olympian to respond to mass shootings. Several biathletes - whose sport combines cross-country skiing with shooting rifles - spoke out after the Florida shooting.
Biathlete Susan Dunklee told The Washington Post before the Games started, referencing the Las Vegas shooting in October:
"I was so distraught and felt so sick to my stomach thinking about that stuff," said Dunklee, who will be the best medal hope among American female biathletes in PyeongChang.
". . . Every time I hear of some mass shooting like that, it's really painful. That's so different than my experience with rifles and firearms. It's tough. I struggle with that."
