Why UConn's Auriemma once wore a Quinnipiac shirt
UConn faces Quinnipiac in the second round of the NCAA women's tournament on Monday - an opponent that reminded UConn coach Geno Auriemma of the early days of his dynasty so much that he wore a Quinnipiac t-shirt to a press conference in the 2017 NCAA tournament.
The gesture came after Quinnipiac, then a 12-seed, had upset 4-seed Miami to make it into the Sweet 16.
"They remind me of our'91 team," he said at the time. "I watched them play the other day. It was about … 8 minutes left in the game and I remember saying 'I think they're going to win.' And I couldn't believe it. And everybody in the place was going nuts. And I thought, 'oh my god this is like 1991 replaying itself.'"
Quinnipiac, now a 9-seed, beat Miami (this year an 8-seed) in the first round of this year's tournament
On Sunday, Auriemma referenced that '91 team again when asked about Quinnipiac.
"They're dangerous," he said. "I remember having a team like that back in the day. And we couldn't wait to play teams like the one I have now."
